Philip Martin’s first half Hat Trick helps Glen to fine win over Ramparts

-

GLEN United hosted Ramparts on Sunday morning last in Glenmore Park in the North Louth Winter League.

Conditions were perfect for this mid table clash and Glen United were first out of the blocks and were ahead within the first minute when Joe McCann put Phillip Martin through before he shot the ball into the corner of the net.

United kept up the pressure and before Ramparts could regroup a one-two between Ciaran McCann and Phillip Martin resulted in a second for Glen’s top goal scorer. Ramparts came into the game more in the middle of the half and Niall Hanratty tested Glen United’s keeper Danny Watters with a rasping shot which he parried over the bar.

Phillip Martin got his hat trick 10 minutes before the end of the half when Stephen Ferguson broke from midfield and sent a looping ball over the Ramparts defence which the Glen striker placed in the back of the net.

Rampart’s Alan Wilson had a chance to get one back when he broke through the United defence but pressure from Glen’s Colin McCann forced his shot wide. Ciaran McCann made it 4-0 just before the half ended when he picked up the ball in midfield and hit a long range shot over the Ramparts keeper.

After half time Ramparts came out strong with Alan Wilson and Caolan Carroll causing Glen Utd’s defence to scramble the ball out of their box within the first five minutes.

Their pressure was rewarded when a Glen United defender handled the ball in the box and the referee duly awarded a penalty. Rampart’s Alan Wilson’s penalty was saved by Danny Watters but he was unable to clear the ball and Wilson drove the ball into the net from the rebound.

Glen’s Jadhran Stimac took more control in midfield and his efforts were rewarded when he deftly played a ball through the Ramparts defence and United’s midfielder Ray Steele coolly slotted the ball home for a 5-1 lead for United.

Good defending from Cormac Barry and Matthew McDonald kept the resurgent Ramparts at bay and at the other end Ramparts defenders Conor Neacy and Eamon Gosling prevented United getting further opportunities. Ramparts got one back however when a crossed ball was headed goal ward by Gavin Buckley only to be met by Alan Wilson who scored to make it 5-2.

Within 5 minutes the referee blew the whistle for the end of the match.
