- By ANNE CAMPBELL

A 59-year-old man on his way to work was threatened with a knife and had items he was carrying stolen from him in an early morning attack.

The incident happened on the Castletown Road on Wednesday morning as the man was walking carrying a bag. He was approached by a man in his late twenties who was on a bike and a knife was produced which was used to threaten the victim to hand over money.

No cash was handed over but the carrier bag he had was taken from him and the robber cycled away towards St Nicholas Avenue. The victim was not physically injured in the incident. The attacker is described as being of slim build and spoke with a local accent.

He was wearing dark clothes and his coat had a fur lining around the hood.

Dundalk Gardai are also investigating the theft of money from the mosque at the Ramparts. The incident happened on Saturday while the premises was open and it was reported at around 8pm that some money was missing from the centre.

Meanwhile, there were a number of burglaries in the area over the past week, including one at Ashbrook, off Tom Bellew Avenue which happened last Tuesday between 6.30 and 8pm. The resident returned to the house that evening to find it ransacked and damaged, but nothing appeared to have been taken.

The burglary may be connected to an incident the same evening on Tom Bellew Avenue at around 5pm when entry was gained to a house through the back window and a bedroom upstairs had been ransacked. Again, nothing was taken in this break-in.

And a business premises at George’s Quay was targeted in a burglary last Wednesday evening when the office of the show rooms was broken into and a small amount of cash taken.
