LOUTH MEP IN BREXIT TALKS WITH KENNY
Louth MEP and Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mairead McGuinness welcomed Taoiseach Enda Kenny to the European Parliament, Brussels this week where they held a series of meetings with fellow MEPs on Brexit.
Speaking about the visit, Ms. McGu8inness said: ‘Ireland’s unique Brexit concerns and the particularly challenging situation the country faces with regard to Brexit, are clearly understood at EU level and will be to the fore of the EU’s negotiations with the UK.’
The Taoiseach met with some of the top Brexit negotiators, and saw his visit make headlines for comments he made in relation to Northern Ireland.
After meeting with EU Commission Presdient Jean Claude Juncker, Mr. Kenny said any Brexit deal should include language that would allow Northern Ireland to easily return to the EU in the event of an united Ireland. The Taoiseach said the provisions that allowed East Germany to join West Germany and the EU ‘in a seamless fashion’ after the fall of the Berlin wall offered a precedent. He added that ‘in such future time, whenever that might be, were it (reunification) to occur, that the north of Ireland would have ease of access to join as a member of the European Union again, we want that language inserted into the negotiated treaty, the negotiated outcome, whenever that might occur.’
