Seconds eyeing third place

-

LEINSTER 2NDS LGE DUNDALK 2nds picked up a comprehensive win on their trip to the Enniskerry Road to boost their chances of a third-place finish in Division 1A of the Leinster 2nds League.

The start of the match saw most of the possession in the middle of the pitch and the ball was kept tight among the forwards at this stage.

Dundalk were keeping up their good defence from the previous week at home against Longford despite the number of changes to the team.

Ultan Murphy got their first points on the board from kicking two penalties mid-way through the first half.

Then, after a number of good phases resulting from mauls off the lineouts, Conor Williams crossed over to score a try and the travelling team were feeling confident at half-time with an 11-0 lead which was just reward for all their hard work and good discipline against a big DLSP pack.

At the start of the second half a scrum on halfway lead by replacement prop Zac Bolton gave Dundalk the upper hand which led to a well-worked backs move for Ultan Murphy to make a break and pass to Paddy Duffy who wasn’t getting caught by his opposite number.

Dundalk continued to play in the DLSP half, while the lineouts continued to work well and Conor Williams crossed over again to keep his try tally going.

Later in the half, DLSP responded and scored a converted try to get themselves back in the game, but the time remaining was against them and towards the end of the match Dundalk continued to put the pressure on the DLSP try line.

Their efforts bore fruit when Darragh Conroy took a quick penalty on the five-metre line to finda gap and score Dundalk’s fourth try to secure a bonus point, with Ultan Murphy completing another great kicking display by adding the conversion.

Dundalk’s final league game against Monkstown at Mill Road has been postponed from this coming Saturday to Sunday week at 1.30pm.
