- Members of Brendan Carthy’s family at Monday’s launch.

A feast of 7-a-side football is guaranteed on April 5th when DkIT hosts the annula Brendan Carthy Cup on campus.

The U-16 tournament is a fitting tribute to the fromer Minor Board chairman, who devoted so much of his life to underage football in the county.

A crowd of 50 people turned up at the college on Monday morning eagerly awaiting the tournament draw which didn’t disappoint.

Monaghan All Star Conor McManus drew out defending champions Partrican High School first and they will face two Louth schools De La Salle and Colaiste Ris, as well as Colaiste Choilm Swords.

Group C is anothe rinteresting one and sees Shane O’Rourke’s St Pats Navan meet Dessie Mone’s, Largy College in a tough section that also includes All Ireland finalists Our Lady’s, Castleblayney.

The Launch was well run by the Brendan Carthy committee which pulled out all the stops bringing in big names like McManus, Oisin McConville, Shane Lennon, Antrim’s Eunan Walsh and Louth’s Derek Crilly help out on the day.

With DkIT’s Trench Cup on show and following a few formalities, Brendan’s son Liam Carthy spoke about the importance of the tournament for the development of the GAA in the North East, allowing 240 players from Dublin, Louth, Meath, Armagh, Cavan, Monaghan and Down to showcase their skills on the day and also to help the DkIT GAA Club promote the college as they strive to regain their Sigerson Cup status in the near future.

A special thanks to DkIT’s partners Louth GAA who have worked side-by-side with DkIT to help promote the Brendan Carthy Tournament and the Lennon Cup each year.
