-

PRAXIS care Louth celebrated a grant from the ‘Get Ireland Growing’ fund run by GIY, the Grow It Yourself initiative.

Grants were awarded to the successful food growing projects planned by community groups, schools and not-for-profit organisations all across the country.

In Louth the funding award went to Praxis Care, The Hub.

A spokesman for the service said: ‘We are a day service for young adults with ID, Autism and/or complex needs. We have an allotment space at a local allotment site in which we aim to support the guys to grow a range of seasonal fruits/veg etc. which we then support the guys to bring to a local market where they man the stall and further build on their skills.’

He added: ‘A lot of the service users have a vested interest in the allotment and learning to work the allotment.’

Commenting at the awards ceremony, the founder of GIY Michael Kelly said, ‘We are delighted to award the recipients of the 2017 Energia Get Ireland Growing fund, which will help 85 community groups from all across Ireland to get their food growing initiatives underway.’

He explained: ‘ These motivating and creative plans, will have real impact for people in parishes, towns, villages and cities across 31 counties. These types of projects usually struggle to find funding and supports and we are very pleased to support these groups to grow food in their own communities.’
