Celtic advance to quarter final of Fitzpatrick Cup

-

CARLINGFORD Celtic qualified for the quarter final of the Fitzpatrick Cup with a hard earned 5-4 victory over Glen United in Glen Park on Sunday last.

A heavy and soggy pitch made life difficult for both teams but Celtic went ahead after 10 minutes when Paddy Farrell finished a fine move to the net.

Following some near misses, Carlingford went 2-0 up on 20 minutes when Conor McGuinness went on a strong run down the right wing and his cross was neatly finished to the net by Conor Cairns. Just before the break Celtic went 3-0 ahead when a cross/ shot from Conor McGuinness deceived the keeper.

Glen came out fighting in the second half and within 10 minutes had pulled two goals back. Firstly a neat one/two between Philip Martin and Ciaran McCann resulted in the latter striking a fine shot to the bottom corner of the net. Three minutes later a corner from the left was powerfully headed to the Carlingford net by Joe McCann. Glen went close again minutes later when a shot from Jadric Stimac struck the top of the bar.

Carlingford upped the pace and scored their fourth goal when Miceal O’Callaghan struck a fine shot to the back of the net. Glen would not lie down and scored their third goal when a good shot from Philip Martin was brilliantly parried by goalkeeper Gary Corrigan but Ray Steele was on hand to stroke the rebound to the net. Conor McGuinness scored his second goal for Celtic in the 70th minute with a fine shot from the edge of the box and in injury time Glen pulled a goal back through Jadric Stimac.
