Big crowd to see World Darts Champ
ON Saturday night, I headed for the Ramada Resort where the living darts legend that is Phil ‘ The Power’ Taylor was playing an exhibition match against 15 local players as a fundraiser for Cara House and the North Louth Hospice and a huge crowd had turned out to see the 1 times world champion in action.
The night was organised by Finbar Kelly from Castletown Road who was ably assisted by his brothers Jason, John and Paul and a number of others to make sure the night was a huge success.
I wasn’t too long in the door when I met up with Edelle Kenny from Avondale Park, Catriona Hennessy from Castleblaney who told me they weren’t there to support any of the players, just to see Phil in action.
They were sitting with Aidan and Marie Kindlon from Louth Village who wanted to wish all the best to Jimmy Reenan from Eamo’s Lounge who was getting ready to do battle with Phil.
Also in their company were Niall Callan and Ian Rooney both from Inniskeen who said that if there as anyone who was going to give Phil a run for his money it had to be Mickey ‘ The Genius’ Fee who throws his arrows with The Bodhran and they were joined in their support by Louise O’Reilly and Bernie Dowdall both from Ardee.
Not too far away I then got a word with John Murnaghan from Cooley and Ciaran McIntyre from Beechmount Drive who said to be there to see the 16 times world champion was enough for them.
After this I headed over for a chat with John Beggy from Meath and Katina Faulkner from Bettystown who were expecting an excellent night from Phil, providing there was no power outage!
Not too long later I met up with Margaret Donovan from Cork and Simon Cusack from Oakland Park and Margaret told me she is a friend of Phil’s and had been travelling with his group and everyone was showing him great hospitality.
Seated close by were Colin Moran and Tony McKenna both from Brookfield Gardens and Aaron Farron from Cooley who told me that Jimmy ‘ The Iceman’ Reenan was the only one worthy of doing battle with Mr. Taylor.
Making my way through the crowds I then got talking to Gavin Kelly from Fatima Court, David Gonnelly from Rathmore Cottages and Patrick Toal from Mullabawn who were looking forward to seeing everyone being put to the sword by Phil.
I then headed over for a quick word with Mickey McMahon from Bridge Street, Ray Harte from Castleross, John Donnelly from Knockbridge, John Lawlor from Daa Key and Jimmy Reenan from Haggardstown who were all looking forward to going up against Phil and all for such a great cause too.
After this I met up with father and son Michael and Kyle Duffy from McSwiney Street who were waiting for the Meet and Greet to finish so they could get in to see the legend in action.
They were sitting having a laugh with Joe McConnell from Navan and Marlene O’Reilly from Kells who told me that Joe’s cousin Darren McConnell was going into battle against Phil later on and wanted to wish him all the best.
Just arrived in the door was Tommy and Finian Moran from Headford who told me it was going to be a good night, but was Kyle going to get up and show Phil who was boss, I wondered?
Finally, before I departed I met up with Thomas and Jennifer Lovell from Tain Court who were with Marion Dunn from Ashbrook, her daughter Joanne O’Shaughnessy from Ashbrook and her son Conor, her brother Daniel and Roeana Dunn from Claddagh Park who were in great form and looking forward to Daniel competing with Phil later on.
