Blackrock Tidy Towns held their annual beach clean up as part of the National Spring Clean last weekend.

Volunteers from across the village and outlying areas, including local schoolchildren, and parents with young children gathered to give the beach and foreshore it’s annual facelift!

Eileen Carter from the Tidy Towns committee said they were delighted with the turn out.

‘We were very lucky that it was a lovely day for the clean up which began over at the boat house, working down across the beach.’

The area is cleaned every week by volunteers, she added, but this was an important annual intensive focus on getting the beach ready for the busy summer season.

‘As always there were a lot of plastic bottles, and plastic bags found along the area,’ said Eileen.

‘We actually filled a whole trailer full of waste collected on the day.’

Volunteers also focused on the dog littering problem which has blighted some areas of the scenic hotspot.

They picked up two tubs of dogs waste, which included plastic bags that owners had used as a poop and scoop before carelessly dumping elsewhere.

‘It is a big problem in the village, and in the park where myself and other volunteers have been working,’ said Eileen.

After the clean up, all the volunteers made their way to the promenade where the adults were treated to free coffees by Mace, and children received goodies from Centra.

Blackrock Tidy Towns are always appealing for more volunteers, and are inviting anyone who is new to the area, and those who have moved into new estates in the village to consider joining, where they can get to know local people, and make a valuable contribution to the community. Anyone interested in joining can get in touch through the Blackrock Tidy Towns Face page.
