CLOVERHILL

-

HAVING attended the wake last week following his runner-up spot in the V Par competition, Ciaran Finnegan (27) - despite the loss of a shot - continued his rich vane of form by capturing the overall winners prize in the Easter 3 Categories competition. Ciaran will not mind the loss of another shot as his 41 points had him one clear of the chasing pack.

Paul Kelly (6) was the Category One winner with 39 points. That was one better than Club Captain Seamus McParland (11) who was ahead of both Paul Owens (12) and Daniel Hughes (10) who both had 38 also.

Leading the chasing pack was Shane Toale (16) with 40 points which left him the Category Two winner by a mile from a trio on 35 points - Anthony Boden (15), Gerard Loye (18) and Raymond Kelly (16).

In Category Three another one of the early-season form players emerged as the winner. Fintan McAleenan (20) had a point to spare over David Rafferty (21) and Eamon Devlin (20).

This coming weekend is the second of our Murphy’s Meigh Monthly Medal competitions.

In the Seniors, the opening 12 holes singles stableford in the Golfer of the Year competition was won on the countback by Raymond McCumiskey with 28 points. Raymond finished ahead of Brendan Hughes, with Charlie McShane back in third spot.

This week’s competition is off the second of the 12-hole courses, with a Par 46 this time - one more than last week. The Seniors’ most prestigious trophy - the Maratime - will see all rounds played over the longer par-49 course which sees the front six and back six holes being played.

Already there has been a great response to the annual fund-raising club classic which will take place on April 29th and 30th and May 1st.

The three-person team costs £60 per team (including food) and is open to both GUI and non-GUI golfers. In fact there will be prizes on offer in three categories -a GUI Section, a non-GUI section and a three-person all-visitors GUI team section. As is the norm in our annual club fundraiser, no full Cloverhill member teams are allowed to participate.

The scoring format this year has been made easier, with one score to count at the par 3s, two scores to count at the par 4s and all three scores to count at the par 5s.
