Quay Athletic end of season awards
ON Friday night I headed for the Lilywhite Lounge where a special presentation night was taking place for local team Quay Athletic and a huge crowd had turned out specially for the occasion.
The team is organised by David Casey from Shelagh who has been training them for the last three years and told me they are great kids who want to put in the effort and are a credit to their parents too.
I then decided to have a look round to see who was enjoying the night and I first met up with my old friend Deirdre Clarke and Nigel McEvilly from Lennonstown Manor who told me their kids Sean Campbell and Aaron McEvilly both play with the club and they were there with their sister Hannah too. The couple told me the lads love the team and its really great for them too.
Next I caught up with the Cunningham’s from Headford, parents Laurence and Paula, twins Hannah and Rebekah and the man with the ‘ best centre half ’ trophy, Matthew. The girls who both play with Quay Celtic and Dundalk FC were in great form and having a laugh with their favourite brother!
Not too far away I then got talking to Bernie and Brendan Moroney from Dromiskin who told me Oisin and Donnagh Reidy both play with ‘ the Athletic and they were joined by Amanda and Terry McEneaney from Darver whose son Finn also straps on his boots for the team and they were very impressed with the way the night had turned out.
Also in their company were Ronan and Marion Miland from Darver who told me their son Niall was dead chuffed with his ‘ best dribbling’ trophy.
Heading for another table I then got a word with Leonne Smyth from Dublin Road who was with husband Martin as well as the-in-laws Mary and Patsy Smyth from Dublin Road, Leon’s mum Geraldine Bell from Meadow Grove and her kids Eli, Jaxon and Lincoln who was the team’s number one shot stopper and they were all up for making the best of the night.
Next I caught up with Simon and Lynn Gray from Dowdallshill who were with kids Aaron, Tom and Lucy and I was told that Aaron was a future ‘star striker’ with the club and said they were hugely impressed with how well the team and the night’s celebrations were organised.
After this I met up with Dymphna and Aidan Mulrooney from Greenwood Drive who are the grandparents of Niamh Norton from The Loakers who won two awards on the night. They were enjoying the company of Sinead and Aidan Reilly from Kilcurry whose son DD plays and they also had daughter Aoibheann there to enjoy the festivities. Also in their company were Maeve Mulrooney from Greenwood Drive with twin boys Conor and Liam Sweeney and their parents Elaine and Sean Sweeney, Niamh’s parents Damien and Aileen Norton and brother Ronan who wanted to wish the organisers all the best on a hugely successful night.
Making my way over to another table I then got talking to Lisa Mulligan and Stephen Quigley both from Castleross who told me that son Keane Mulligan had won the award for the best defender and were having a lovely night with everyone there.
Not too far away I got a word with Keelan and David Madigan from Finnabar Crescent who told me their kids Shay and Jay both play with Jay becoming this year’s captain.
Meanwhile up near the bar I got a word with Alan Gartlan from Newtownbalregan who told me he was dead proud of his son Aaron who was playing with the team and really enjoying it.
After this I met up with Siobhan Murphy from Redbarns Road who told me her son Jack McEntegart had won most improved goalkeeper with the club and she was having a laugh with Kieran McNamee from Lennonstown Close who is also the main man in the Punters bar and is one of the club’s sponsors during the year.
Finally, before I departed I got a word with my old friend Joanne and Denis Daly from Point Road whose son Denis Jnr won the ‘ most versatile player’ award and they had young Ryan McCabe from Mourne Vale with them too. Denis and Joanne were all praise for the organisers saying they had done an excellent job throughout the season and the presentation night was a huge credit to them too.
