Hair-raising cut for Rapunzel!

AMY (12) DONATES HER HAIR TO CHARITY

- by OLIVIA RYAN

IT isn’t every 12 year old girl who is brave enough to get most of her hair chopped off!

But that’s exactly what Amy Coogan did when she learned about the inspiring work of the Rapunzel Foundation.

‘My hair was getting very long, and I just thought it would be a good idea to get it cut for charity,’ Amy told the Argus.

She admitted that having only had three or four trims to her long locks since she was born, her hair had become ‘a bit too long.’

But ideally, she had much more than the 14 inches required to make a donation to Rapunzel.

The Rapunzel Foundation is an organisation which helps people with hair loss through providing information, sharing stories and through the collection of pony tails for the manufacture of natural hair wigs.

A spokesperson for the charity explained just how important these brave acts are.

‘Collecting ponytails from donors helps to address the current global wighair shortage issue and allows us to alleviate the cost of wig purchase for those who need help most.’

Rapunzel has a number of affiliated hair salons through the country who cut hair for clients who intend to make a donation.

In Amy’s case, she chose Justin Casey’s salon in Park Street, where she added ‘ they really made me feel at ease.’

With the encouragement of her dad Ian, and mum Aine, she went along to find out how the donation would work.

‘ They were really nice, so I wasn’t nervous at all when it came to getting it cut.’

Stylist Christina Martin was able to dress Amy’s hair into four plaits before she cut each separately.

And in a hair raising moment, the Friary pupils even got to pose with her donated plaits!

Despite the drastic cut, Amy was delighted to still have shoulder length hair, which she is event talking about growing again in order to make a second donation to Rapunzel.

know yet, I’ll think about it. I really like it now, it’s so much easier to look after, to wash and dry,’ said Amy.

Starting secondary school in the Autumn, and hitting her teenage years, she is likely to have only begun on the path of varying hair trends!
