In-form strikers Quay to success

-

A POTENT looking Quay Celtic hit 10 goals in two games to take a share of top spot with the champions Muirhevnamor in the Dundalk Summer League.

Ian Devine notched a hat-trick to head a lethal threesome, finding goals easily to record at this early stage of the season. This coupled with a brace by new signing Barry Carr secured a 5-2 win over newcomers Walshestown, who are at the opposite end of the table, sharing bottom spot with fellow newcomers Setanta.

It was Carr’s second successive brace, emulating Cormac Reid who also has twice netted a double..

However, Devine has a goal more than the pair, as a result of his hat-trick, having scored in each of Quay’s first two games, and has a scoring average of a goal a game.

He opened his account in the 7-3 win over Fane. The next game he also was on the mark against joint leaders Muirhevnamor but it wasn’t enough to prevent Quay suffering their only defeat.

Muirhevnamor lost their first game with the league’s top marksman Luca Marsella the main author of the defeat scoring twice as Ramparts ran out 3-1 winners.

But Celtic haven’t been able to sustain their early season form sustaining their second defeat of the campaign at the hands of Fane. However, Marsella has maintained his form, scoring in that 4-2 defeat to bring his goal tally to nine, an average of just under two a match.

The champions picked up straight after that defeat to reel off four straight wins, the latest a convincing 5-2 victory over Setanta.

Tiernan Mulvenna who has swapped places on the sideline from where he steered the club to their first title success in the North East League has played an important part in this run.

He has scored in each of the champions last three matches, including their most recent game against Setanta when they ran out clear-cut 5-1 victors.

Shamrocks look the main danger again to the champions, having interrupted their winning gallop to take the title in 2015. They are the only team with a 100 per cent record after playing three games, two less than the joint leaders who they currently trail by three points.

They defeated Doolargy All Stars 3-0 in midweek with Billy Smith, Owen Armstrong and Conor Mackin their scorers.
