Javelin ace leads the Glenmore challenge

A SMALL, but determined, Glenmore contingent competed in the Leinster Track and Field Championsh­ips in Tullamore at the weekend.

First up was Niall Brady who took to the runway in the Under-16 boys Long Jump and jumped his way to 6th position with a new PB, which got the weekend off to a great start. His sister Ava also jumped extremely well in the u13 girls Long Jump.

Katie Mallon took to the track and competed in both the u17 400m placing 7th and 800m placing 6th position in sweltering sunshine conditions. This was Katie’s first experience of Leinster competitio­n and she certainly did herself proud.

Ciaran Flynn u16 1500m acquitted himself very well among a fast field despite being in the middle of his Junior Cert Exams. Tadhg Leahy competed in the u19 3000m placing 4th position and qualifying for the All Ireland Championsh­ips.

Richard Campbell who is a very keen sprinter qualified comfortabl­y in his heat u16 100m to the final where he was just out of the medals. Daragh Brady u15 200m just missed out on the final but nonetheles­s is showing great progress in his sprinting this season. His brother Niall qualified in his u16 200m heat to the final placing 5th position.

At the end of Day 1 Nicole Barry represente­d Louth in the u15 girls Inter County 4x100m relay where the team placed a fantastic 2nd while both Richard and Niall (sub) then represente­d Louth in the u17 boys Inter County 4x100m relay where the team also placed a super 2nd.

On Day 2 Katelyn Quinn got the action off to a flying start placing 2nd in the Under-17 Javelin qualifying for the All Ireland Championsh­ips. Katie Conlon ran outstandin­gly well in her u15 800m and Chloe Mc Carragher had a great performanc­e in her u12 Turbo Javelin.

Hannah Stewart was 4th in the u19 1500m also qualifying to All Ireland championsh­ips despite being in the middle of her leaving cert exams.

Elsewhere, Gerry Stewart ran the Phoenix Park 5 mile on Saturday and Glenmore members Shane Lynch and Donal Mc Porland did the 11 mile Northern Ireland mountain running associatio­n race on the Cooley Mountains.
