Liam Doran to step down from INMO role

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has appointed a new General Secretary after Liam Doran announced earlier this year that he is stepping down from the role.

Mr Doran, who is from Togher and trained in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, will officially step down from his position on January 1st, 2018.

Liam has served with the INMO for more than 30 years having joined as a Student Officer in June 1983.

He subsequently worked as an Industrial Relations Officer and Deputy General Secretary before his appointment to the post of General Secretary in October 1998.

In his role as General Secretary Liam was the lead negotiator in all of the pay talks in recent years and co-ordinated the formulation of all written submissions to the Labour Court and other third party bodies.

His vision for the future would see the Organisation continuing to grow and becoming the union of choice for all nurses and midwives working in the health services in Ireland.

Liam is married to Patricia and he has two children called Adam and Aoife. When away from work his main interests are his family, sport in general and in particular golf.

Following public consultation, Ms Phil Ní Sheaghdh, former INMO Director of Industrial Relations, was appointed as the new General Secretary Designate from July 1st.

Ms Ní Sheaghdha qualified as a General Nurse in 1988 from Jervis Street Hospital. She then moved to the UK where she specialised as an Intensive Care Nurse.

She has worked in Ireland, the UK, Australia and the USA as an ICU nurse.

On her return to Ireland, in 1993, she joined the staff of St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin.

The new General Secretary joined the INMO as a fulltime Industrial Relations Officer in 1998.

She subsequently completed an MA in Industrial Relations and Trade Union Studies, in 2007, and was appointed Director of Industrial Relations in 2008. In addition, she obtained a Higher Diploma in Employment Law in 2015. Phil has been a member of the Executive Council of the ICTU for many years and currently sits on the ICTU General Purposes Committee.

Phil is currently chair of the Health Service Staff Panel, the collective body for all unions representing staff in the health service, and, in this capacity, has led the union side in many different sets of negotiations. Phil was previously a member of the Employment Appeals Tribunal.

Phil is a native of the West Kerry Gaeltacht, is bilingual and her first language is Irish.

“I would like to thank Liam, and all the INMO colleagues I have worked with over the past 19 years. I have been very fortunate to have had such a great mentor, as Liam, and such committed colleagues within the Organisation.
