Points blow for champs

-

THE champions suffered a big double setback to retaining their title when the League Committee awarding the game and the points to near neighbours Doolargy as a result of the abandoned game between the teams last week. Goalkeeper David Cooney who was centrally involved in the incident has also been banned for the remainder of the season.

Muirhevnamor were leading 2-1 with less than half an hour to play at the all weather pitch at Muirhevnamor when the match official felt it necessary to stop the game.

He had booked Muirhevnamor’s David Cooney and then showed him a red card as he apparently took exception to the referee’s handling of an offside.

The League Committee also took the view that the club was culpable for the goalkeeper’s behaviour.

The champions beat one of their main challengers Quay Celtic by the odd goal in five on Monday night as the League Committee adjudicated on the controversial issue.

Walshestown earned their first point of the season the next night with a one all draw with fellow strugglers Doolargy, who moved up to third last having received the points from the abandoned match.

Danann McMahon scored for Walshestown and Keith Harmon netted for Doolargy.

Shamrock closed the gap to five points with two games in hand on the leaders Muirhevnamor with their first win in three outings by defeating Setanta 4-0, courtesy of goals by TJ Murtagh, Stephen Grimes, Conor and Robbie Mackin.

Rampart inflicted a second successive defeat on and dealt a serious blow to Quay’s title hopes on Thursday night. Quay lie currently second and Rampart next in the table and the teams served up a nine goal feast like the other game the same night between two of the bottom teams.

Rampart edged the encounter by the odd goal, with Aiden Mc Guinness nabbing a brace, and Sean Mc Quillan, Saheed Ogunfuwora, Luca Marsella scoring a goal each.

Que Olowu also scored twice for Quay and their other marksmen were Ian Devine and Sean Mathews
