Newtown Blues triumph over St. Pa tricks in Junior Championsh­ip

St. Patrick’s junior men lost out by a goal in last night’s championsh­ip match against Newtown Blues in Drogheda.

The Blues got off to a better start and lead by 1-3 to no score after 22mins before Colin McCann got the opening Pat’s score with a point in the 24th min. Shane Hynes added a free 3 minutes later. Then with a minute to the break Jack Murphy scored a point after seeing his earlier bullet rebound of the crossbar. The Blues got a free just before the half time whistle to extend their lead back to 4 at the break.

The second half started more promising for the Pat’s with Colin McCann scoring his second point of the match within a minute and Jack Murphy adding a free in the 5th. Then in the 10th min Patrick Lynch found himself one on one with the Blues goalie and made no mistake blasting the ball to the back of the net to give the Pat’s the lead for the first time. Cian Duffy added a further point to extend the Pat’s lead to 2 mid way through the half. The Blues however rallied in the next few minutes adding 3 quick points to retain their lead. Then in the 22nd minute came the killer blow when the Blues scored their second goal of proceeding­s and this left the gap between the sides 4 with 8min left on the clock. The Pat’s boy’s battled hard until the end with the Blues goalie taking off some brilliant saves to deny them. Patrick Lynch did close the gap with a point from a free but the Blues held out to win by a goal. Final score; Newtown Blues 2-7 v St. Patrick’s 1-7.
