Top honours for St. Vincent’s girls!

- By OLIVIA RYAN

NERVES, excitement and fear hung in the air as the class of 2017 picked up their Leaving Cert results in St. Vincent’s.

After a sleepless night, the day of reckoning had come, and with a new points system in place, there was added uncertainty even after the envelopes were opened.

Principal Deirdre Matthews said it was another ‘fantastic’ year with many students exceeding even their own expectations.

‘It’s been a great morning for so many of our students, including two who achieved an incredible 601 points under the new points system.’

‘We had an amazing thirty students who have over 500 points, with 11 of those being over 550,’ said Ms. Matthews.

One of the top scorers was Roisin Kelly, from the Avenue Road who totted up an unbelievable 601 points after deciphering the new system.

Modest about her achievements, she admitted that despite the hard work that went into exam preparation, she didn’t take anything for granted.

‘I was just hoping for the best.. you never know when you go into an exam.’

Overcome with emotion, she was thrilled to find out that she had achieved what is needed for her top choice at college - medicine.

‘I am hoping to get a place in Galway, but I’ll wait and see,’ said Roisin, adding that she has an interest in either neuro or cardiac specialties.

Proud principal Ms. Matthews added ‘Roisin is an incredible student, she has worked so hard. She is definitely able to achieve what she sets her mind to.’

There was, it seemed, a wide range of career choices on the cards for the Leaving Certs students, from tourism to teaching, and medicine to actuary.

Naoise McGuinness told how she had her sight sets on university in Edinburgh, after very positive results in her exams.

‘Yes I’m really happy with what I got, I’m hoping to start Languages and Tourism,’

she added.

Caoimhe Mulligan, Avenue Road was thrilled with her results, which she hopes will secure her a place at DkIT.

Shannon O’Hanlon, Manydown was hoping to have secured her place in Actuary and Maths at Dublin City University after a positive outcome to her Leaving Cert hopes!

Meanwhile, Charlotte Irwin is planning to a career in teaching after scooping the

points she needed for a place at St. Patrick’s, Dromcondra. Fellow teaching hopeful Victoria Lynn was happy to have secured points to further her plans in primary teaching

Also celebrating were Joy Quigley from Willow, who has her sights set on studying Social Science at DCS and Anna Guilgunn, from Ardee Road, who was ‘really happy’ with the results.
