Square swoop late to sink Rock

SQUARE swooped with a late winner to leave them with maximum points from their opening two games and leading the way in the first division.

It was a somewhat cruel outcome for relegated Rock who were looking like they were the side who could snatch victory when the home side struck with the all important goal three min- OLDCASTLE were flattered by this scoreline in a game Woodview dominated on Sunday and went three nil ahead. However the losers converted virtually the only two scoring chances they created, and the dividing margin as a result was close in the end but Woodview always had control of the points as they look to return straight back to the first utes from the end on Sunday.

The winners squandered a golden opportunit­y to break the deadlock in the opening five minutes when they were awarded a penalty only be denied by Shane O’Donoghue who turned in a Man of the Match display in the Rock goal.

Square were the better side in the first 20 minutes, but Rock came well into the game after that.

They enjoyed their best spell then after the break, with Des McKeown grazing the home division..

The visitors took the lead on 40 minutes with Jason Myles scoring the first of a brace of goals.

Shane Taaffe added a second for the visitors ten minutes into the second-half. Kyle Carroll flicked on a corner kick at the near post and when it came off a defender Taaffe re-acted fastest to find the top of the net.

Myles further stretched the visitors’ advantage five minutes later. He finished delightful­ly a fine move involving post, and full-back Brendan Rogers shot just over the crossbar.

It looked like ending scoreless but Square grabbed that precious goal that could be so vital over the course of the season. Rock have one point from their opening two games, both played away from home.

Dean Hoey and Conor Macken, perfectly timing his run and shot from the edge of the box to find the home net.

Oldcastle then enjoyed a rub of the green as they pulled a goal back, and nabbed another with ten minutes remaining from a penalty kick , the awarding of which left the visitors mystified.
