Bellurgan rue missed chances

TRIM CELTIC BELLURGAN UNITED 2 0

BELLURGAN displayed definite signs of a side that was only getting to know each other, and paid the full price for two lapses from set pieces that resulted in both goals and the points for the home side on Sunday.

Bellurgan scorned three gilt edge chances in the second-half that should have yielded at least a draw from this match, but composure let them down, but while disappointing there were encouraging signs for new manager Wayne Conroy who is still missing several players on account of injury and other reasons.

The opening ten minutes the telltale evidence was there that new and existing players are only getting to know each other, and Trim took advantage to dominate and took the lead.

A low corner kick was defended poorly by Bellurgan, and a home play- er nipped in at the front post to gain a decisive touch.

Tellingly this proved to be Bellurgan’s achillies heel, as Trim nabbed their second goal in much the same manner from another corner kick in the last five minutes after they had been let off the hook in Bellurgan’s best spell of the match in the first 15 minutes of the second-half..

The away side played their way into the game after that shaky opening for Keith Finnegan, on his return to the side to nearly catch out the home goalkeeper with an audacious lob from the half way line. The goalkeeper just managed to get his finger tips to the ball to keep it out of his net.

Owen Armstrong with another long range effort from outside the penalty box was just wide of the post.

Then just before the half-time whistle Bellurgan goalkeeper Robert Arthur went full length to turn a header around his post .

The first of three great chances for Bellurgan to equalise fell to Owen Armstrong who rounded the home goalkeeper at the end of move initiated by Man of the Match Owen Traynor, but his effort was headed off the Trim goal line.

The ball was put out for a corner kick, which the home goalkeeper fisted out for Keith Fin to whip back in to his namesake Stephen who headed just over the crossbar

John Smith then made it to the by-line to whip in a cross for Barr Carry who should have scored but sent his header wide of the post.

In the final 15 minutes Bellurgan threw caution to the wind to secure an equaliser, and should have secured it but Owen Armstrong failed to make proper contact on a cross from Jimmy Byrne and put it wide.

Trim sealed victory with nearly a replica of their first goal. A player stole in at the near post to flick a corner kick into the far corner of the net.
