D’hill stage senior hurling semi final
August 1987
THE hurlers of Antrim are none too happy at being denied a big stage on which to play their All-Ireland Senior Championship semi-final against Kilkenny.
However, it turns out to be a great occasion for St. Brigid’s Park and host club, Dowdallshill.
One Sunday newspaper is dismissive of the fixture, and predicts a crowd of 500 for the Newry Road venue, but an attendance of almost 5,000 pays in to see Kilkenny win by 2-18 to 2-11.
A bumper programme begins with the U-16 special hurling final between Antrim and Wicklow.
There is excitement before throw-in, as the Wicklow team bus breaks down outside Drogheda.
Supporters cars are commandeered, and some players arrive only minutes before the start.
In the minor semi-final, holders Offaly easily account for the Saffrons.
A similar scenario is expected in the big match, but Antrim make Kilkenny work hard for victory.
Harry Ryan top-scores for the Cats with 2-5, while Danny McNaughton accounts for the two Antrim goals.
Dowdallshill earn great praise for their arrangements, including the personal thanks of GAA president, Mick Loftus.
Kilkenny great Eddie Keher is wholesome in his compliments about the playing surface.
One of the biggest tasks is carried out by Dowdallshill’s ladies’ committee in providing some 300 meals for all the workers and officials.
Following the three games of hurling, St. Brigid’s Park stages the second semi-final of the Louth senior football championship.
Clan Na Gael and St. Patrick’s play out a draw. A poor match finishes 1-4 apiece.
