10-man Glens suffer

NEWTOWN GLENMUIR 3 0

AFTER securing their first league win the previous weekend, Glenmuir travelled to play bottom club Newtown in the third division of the North East League on Sunday and were in control for the first 40 minutes without posing much of a goal threat.

However, the game turned completely in the home side’s favour then with Glenmuir goalkeeper David McKenny receiving his marching orders after retaliating when a home player barraged into him.

Danny Mullen with no goalkeeping experience had to take over between the posts and within a couple of minutes Newtown took advantage when a free-kick from half way bounced in front of goal and one of their players nipped in to head the ball over the stand-in custodian.

Ten minutes into the second half the home side scored their second goal to virtually assure victory and their first points after five games.

This goal knocked the stuffing out of Glenmuir and their fate was sealed five minutes from time when the home winger crossed for their striker to notch their third goal.

Glenmuir struggled to create openings, especially when reduced to ten men.

Their best opportunities was a half chance which Brendan Sheils couldn’t convert, and the home goalkeeper saved a freekick from John Byrne 15 minutes from the end.
