FR FRANK WOODS AND HIS KOREAN WAR MEDAL

A report from 50 years ago from the DI about a great Dunleer man.

‘On his fourth visit home to his native Co. Louth since he left for the Korean missions in 1935, Very Rev. Frank Woods has been renewing acquaintanceship with many people from the Boyneside Counties in the last few weeks... as well as making new friends. On Thursday he assisted at the marriage of his cousin, Miss Ann Cavanagh, in St. Brigid’s Church, Dunleer, where he was baptised and where he celebrataed his first Mass in 1934.

‘An outstanding missionary priest of the Columban Fathers, Navan, Father Woods was interned by the Japanese for four years after the attack on Pearl Harbour, and in 1951 was awarded the Medal of Freedom (with Silver bar) by the U.S. army for meritorious service on the Korean battle front. When the conflict with the Communists broke out in Korea, Father Woods often risked his life with the American army (in which he was then serving), and it was for this exceptional courage that he was decorated.’

PAUL CALLS IT A DAY AFTER ALMOST 40 YEARS

THE region lost a great garda recently when Inspector Paul Kiernan retired from the force after almost 40 years.

Paul was a real worker and did so much behind the scenes to help people and families and that tyoe of atttitude to his career and life will never be forgotten by the people he helped.

He was a popular face out and about on the streets too and his wealth of experience will be missed by the force locally.

Enjoy the retirement Paul.
