A 27-year-old-man who unlawfully used his mother’s car, has received a 12 months suspended sentence and five-year driving disqualifi­cation.

Shane Dixon, 526 Ashling Park, Dundalk, admitted that offence, and a further charge of having no driving licence, for which he received a one month suspended sentence.

Sgt Fintan McGroder said that on the morning of 16 July, 2017, Dixon went into his mother’s bedroom, and took the keys of her Nissan Duke.

She subsequent­ly reported the car stolen, and gardaí later saw it being driven by the accused at Coulter Place.

No damage was caused.

Dixon has 36 previous conviction­s, going back to 2013.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery added his client’s record is very poor.

He is not working, and on this occasion, took his mother’s car without permission.

The probation service advised the court that a community service order made against Dixon is going to be revoked.

They are ‘ quite concerned’ for him and his well-being.

McCormack also had a brass knuckle duster with four sharpened points.

Sgt. McGroder continued the defendant admitted having the cannabis herb for sale or supply.

Solicitor Conor McGuill said McCormack was selling for his own use at the time, and has desisted.
