Big week for Benson

IT was a big week for Robbie Benson who scored the 50th goal of his career with his late equaliser away to Cork City on Monday night before chipping in with his first ever FAI Cup goal against Shamrock Rovers on Sunday. The Athlone man now has 11 goals in all competitions this season, overtaking his previous season best of nine for UCD in 2013. He has now scored more goals against Shamrock Rovers (6) than any other opposition he has played against.

100th goal for Dundalk

BENSON’S opener against Shamrock Rovers on Sunday was a landmark goal in more ways than one as it was also the 100th goal that Stephen Kenny’s side have scored in all competitions this season.

Landmark appearances

THERE were a number of landmark appearances for Dundalk players throughout the week. Against Cork on Monday night Dane Massey (pictured right) made his 200th appearance for the club while for Dylan Connolly it was his 100th career appearance. Michael Duffy also made the 125th start of his professional career against Shamrock Rovers on Sunday while there was a 75th Dundalk appearance for his fellow Derry man Patrick McEleney on the day.

Rovers’ ill discipline

DAVE McAllister’s red card on Sunday was the ninth occasion that Shamrock

Rovers have had a man sent off this season.

It was also the fourth red in five matches that

Rovers have picked up against Dundalk this year following the dismissals of Graham Burke at Oriel

Park on the opening day of the season, Darren Meenan in the defeat in Ta llaght in May and Aaron Bolger in the EA Sports Cup final last month.

By contrast Ciaran Kilduff’s red card against Cork City back in March is the only red card Dundalk have picked up in 2017.
