SAINT DOMINIC’S MUIRHEVNAMOR 1 7

MUIRHEVNAMOR were just too big, strong and powerful for the hosts at a beautifully sunny Friary Field on Saturday in the under-17 league as they extended their unbeaten start to the campaign to three matches.

They simply overwhelmed the losers in the opening half and had pocketed the points by the interval with a 5-1 lead with which they were no way flattered.

It was one of their very rare attacks in the closing minutes that produced the Dominic’s lone reward in the game when Darren Mundow won a penalty kick when tripped inside the visitors penalty box. Fintan Brady struck the spot kick low and close to Muirhevnamor goalkeeper Precious Kent but it flew underneath him into the net.

However, Muirhevnamor immediately re-asserted their dominance when the hard pressed home defence gained a fleeting reprieve when a defender cleared a net bound shot in front of his goal line only to fly straight to Samuel Olaknbasubo who struck the ball first time through the crowded goalmouth into the net seconds before the half time whistle.

To their credit Saint Dominic’s pluckily came more into the a match and were more of an attacking force in the second half, but Man of the Match Paddy Nicholson sunk any slim chance they had of staging a miraculous comeback by completing his hat-trick.

He was the fulcrum of the winners attacking play in the opening 20 minutes when they established a tight grip, with Moyo Bodun who opened the scoring also an equally menacing attacker.

Nicholson twice went perilously close to scoring with his second effort deflected for a corner from which the towering Samuel Olaknbasubo nodded the ball down in the goalmouth for Conal Doyle to prod home.

Nicholson then applied a sweet finish when William Opoku passed to him inside the penalty box and he struck an angled low shot into the far corner of the net .

He then was largely instrumental in setting up his side’s fourth goal, collecting the ball when is broke off Dominic’s goalkeeper Jack McKenna and weaved in along the end line, beating a couple of opponents to part to a colleague to lay a pass back to Bodun to nab his second and the winners fourth goal and not much more than 20 minutes elapsed.

The constant waves of attack by the winners were briefly interrupted, and Dominic’s offered more attacking intent after the changeover.

However, a brilliant stop by the Doms goalkeeper foiled Bodun from completing his hattrick. The forward broke clear into the penalty box and looked like he was dribbling past the Dominic’s goalkeeper when a perfectly time outstretched foot nicked the ball from him.

Instead Nicholson took the scoring honours with the most precise of side foot finishes low into the corner of the net when a corner by Kutan Amau broke to him just inside the 18 yard box.

Then he showed he also was as comfortable shooting with his right as his left foot when Amau put him in possession again inside the box and he drove the ball low under the goalkeeper.
