October 1997

COOLEY Kickhams GFC 10th annual golf classic at Greenore on Bank Holiday Monday proves to be the most successful.

In delightful weather, with a noon shotgun start, 120 participate.

The Slieve Foy Tool & Dye team of Michael Owen McGrath, Brian Rafferty, James McCormick and Alo McGrath wins with 90 points (back nine).

Runners-up, also 90pts, is Tony Maguire’s team, which also includes James Maguire, Peter Murphy and Paul Byrne.

In third spot is Fitzpatrick’s Golf Society (Cyril Roddy, Oliver Dullaghan, Tony McGuinness and Brian McDonnell) with 88pts, 47 on back nine.

They just pip the Woods, Ahern & Mullen side of Peter McGooey, John McGooey, Francis Martin and Ronan McParland, fourth, on 88pts (45 on back nine).

Chloe Enterprises ( Valerie McCartney, Veronica Duffy, Joan Bailey and Valerie Clark) also accumulates 88pts (44 on back nine), but has to be content with fifth place.

Sixth is the Greenore Co-op team of Joe Carroll, Chris Larkin, Brian Larkin and Damien Smith, 87pts.

Just a point behind in seventh is the Louth Commercials quartet of Gerry Tuite, Charlie Smyth, Willie Gogarty and Marguerite Reilly.

With so many former players having taken up golf since the end of their footballing days, the classic proves a fitting occasion to renew old acquaintances.

That is another reason for the latest renewal being the best supported since the Cooley classic was inaugurated.

The organisers greatly appreciate the Greenore club making the course available for the event.

Afterwards, the golfers adjourn to the clubhouse for a meal and refreshments.
