- Mary O’Hanlon 1925-2017

THE death occurred peacefully of Mary O’Hanlon (nee Clarke) at her home in Irish Grange, Carlingford, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday 13 August, 2017.

Mary was born on 25 June, 1925 in Grove Road, Carlingford to John and Brigid Clarke (nee Morgan).

She attended Carlingford National School and later worked on the family farm and McCann’s House, Grove Road. Following this she worked in McKevitt’s Hotel, Carlingford.

She married Sean O’Hanlon from Benagh, Riverstown on Tuesday 12 November, 1957, and they moved to Irish Grange, where they set up home and raised their family.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother and worked hard to provide a warm and loving home.

She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed their frequent visits.

Mary was a kind-hearted woman and her door was always open to friends and neighbours.

Over the last number of years Mary regularly attended the Carlingford Day-care Centre every Tuesday, and enjoyed all the trips and social occasions run by the day-care centre, especially a trip to Darver Castle, just over two years ago to celebrate her 90th Birthday.

She also enjoyed the social outlet of a game of Bingo and she always looked forward to the annual trips with the Red Cross.

She loved her television and music, and was a great fan of Daniel O’Donnell.

Mary enjoyed a great love for baking, including her homemade bread, apple tarts and buns. Knitting was also a great past-time for her in earlier years.

Mary was a religious woman with a strong faith and she attended mass regularly every Sunday. She enjoyed regular trips to Knock and was truly humbled when she finally made a trip to Lourdes a few years ago.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Sean; son, Leo; son-in law, Liam; brother, Luke; and sister, Josephine.

She is sadly missed and remembered by daughters, Briege Clifford and Geraldine Kirk; sons, John, Hugh, Pat and Paul O’Hanlon; son-in-law, Sean Kirk; daughters-in-law, Mary O’Hanlon, Niamh O’Hanlon and Karen Wright; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nephew, niece, cousins, neighbours and friends.

After reposing at her home, Mary’s remains were removed to St. James’s Church, Grange for the funeral Mass which was celebrated by Fr. Malachy Conlon and Fr. Tommy McNulty.

At the beginning of Mass, symbols of Mary’s life, including her prayer book and homemade bread, were laid before the altar by her grandchildren Nicola, Christine, Briagh, Lisa and Ciaran.

The readings were given by grand-daughters, Rose and Sinead; while the Prayers of the Faithful were led by Mary’s grandchildren, Michaela, Jennifer, Ryan, Louise and Maria.

The Reflection Prayer was read by granddaughter, Mary.

Music was provided by Carmel and Fidelma.

Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.
