Kirk goal is the ‘Quay’ in great Shamrocks win

QUAY CELTIC SHAMROCKS 1 2

SHAMROCKS in the one meaningful attack they mounted in the first half took the lead as Quay dominated play that was concentrated at the visitors end in this under-13 game at Clancy Park.

Stout defending kept Quay at bay. Then in the opening minutes of the second period Shamrocks showed more in attack than in the entire first period only to waste two good opportunities to take a strong grip on the game and Quay made them pay as Eoin McGuire equalised.

However, Quay lacked a cutting edge in attack and very rarely threatened the Shamrocks goal with the visitors goalkeeper Ryan Rice Martin hardly called into action.

This opened the way for Shamrocks to nab the decisive goal midway through the period, and it was a fine opportunist effort by Aodhan Kirk who was fastest to re-act as their other scorer DD Reilly headed the ball over the home defence from the edge of the 18 yard line. Kirk fastened onto it as it dropped to smash it past the helpless Quay custodian from eight yards.

The diminutive and tricky Cathal Cochran could have wrapped up victory shortly after as Reilly once again fashioned a clear-cut chance as he drove the ball low across the face of the Quay goal but Cochran all alone at the back post couldn’t turn it into the gaping net.

This afforded Quay the opportunity to snatch a last gasp equaliser when Shay Downey on an isolated occasion was set free inside the visitors’ penalty box to the left of goal. But he dithered which allowed a Shamrocks defender to partially block and deflect his shot into the waiting hands of his goalkeeper.

For all their possession in the first half Quay could made no real inroads into the Shamrocks defence, and were rocked by a jinking run by Sean Connolly who beat two players down the right and the home side failed to clear his cross and conceded a penalty.

DD Reilly calmly stroked the spot kick low inside the left hand bottom post after just five minutes.

Kevin Teather free in space close to goal from a cross by Eoin McGuire couldn’t convert Quay’s best opening.

Suddenly on the resumption of play after the break Shamrocks cut loose twice through the heart of the Quay defence in the matter of minutes. Matthew McArdle was put through by Sean Connolly for his shot to be pushed away by Conor Crawley, who also was well positioned inside his post to foil DD Reilly at the end of a driving run into the home box.

A long range free by the home side’s Liam O’Hanlon was pushed away for a corner kick from which Shamrocks had a let off, but six minutes into the half Quay drew level.

In the end Shamrocks merited victory if only for the fact that they carried more thrust in attack, along with a resolute defence.
