Thousands at RTE’s ‘Beat on the Street’

October 1987

-

THERE is relief as RTE’s ‘Beat On The Street’ goes off without any significant trouble.

Fears for the safety of residents and property in Roden Place square prove unfounded, as thousands of young people gather for the show.

However, the event is threatened up until the night before, when there is talk of a court injunction.

Organisers don’t realise until late in the week that there is such opposition, and try to smooth over any concerns.

The music is loud, as DJs, Maxi and Barry Lang entertain the crowds.

Estimates of the attendance vary. RTE say 8,000, while gardaí say 5,000.

Nevertheless, everyone appears to enjoy themselves, although there are some isolated incidents of trouble.

There is evidence of some drinking, and a few items are thrown at the stage.

Indeed, the stage, erected at a cost of £8,000 is an impressive sight, and, alongsid e the lighting and music, makes for a spectacular occasion.
