Clock turned back for 80s Dynamo disco in Cooley Hall

-

For anyone from the Cooley penninsula, or indeed townies with culchie friends, who grew up in the 80s, going to Mickey Duffy’s Dynamo Disco was a right of passage.

Mickey spun the discs long before turntables became hispter accessories. He plied his trade in parish halls and community centres in the days when big hair, primary colours and metallic eye shadow was in fashion.

Mickey, who is nowadays better known as the voice of Oriel Park, brought his turntable and vinyls to the Cooley complex for a third and final time on Saturday night, before stacking them away in the attic.

There was a great turnout with the class of ‘87 from Bush Post Primary School using the occasion as an excuse for a reunion to celebrate three decades of adulthood.

Many of those attending made an effort to revisit their fashion mistakes of the past as they became ‘dancing queens’ for the night.

Mickey took the dancers on a musical tour of the era, playing everything from pop to punk, from the New Romantics to rock, from ska to country, with slow sets thrown in so that everyone could recall their early romances.

Scenes from ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Ghostbusters’ were projected on the walls of the hall, adding to the sense of nostalgia.

Dancers were able to cool down with the various 80’s cocktails which were served in the bar and refuel at the chipper which was parked outside.

And there was even a special cake for Mickey who afterwards thanked everyone for turning up to make it such a great night.

Mickey, who is also a talented artist, has donated a painting of the great Bruce Springsteen for auction in aid of St Vincent de Paul. There’s a bid of €100 on the colourful painting so far and any fans who fancy giving it pride of place on a wall can still make a bid for it by getting in touch with the Cooley Kickhams via Facebook.
