Car fails to stop leading to collision on Armagh Road

Gardai are investigat­ing a collision on the Armagh road outside Dundalk on Sunday evening.

The Argus has learned that a car had reportedly failed to stop for gardai along the Inner Relief Road, and continued travelling towards the Armagh Road where it eventually came to a stop just before 6pm, after colliding with a traffic island, a nearby pavement and another vehicle.

Gardai confirmed that the 37 year old man driving the car, and his passenger, a 29 year old female, were removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda following the collision.

Meanwhile, gardai are investigat­ing criminal damage caused to a church in Dundalk over the weekend.

Three windows were smashed at the Holy Family church in Muirhevnam­or at around 11pm on Saturday night.

CCTV in the area is being examined as part of the investigat­ion.

Meanwhile gardai questioned a 36 year old man after a small quantity of cannabis herb was uncovered during the search of a premises on Park Street in the last week.

The National Slow Down road safety campaign was also held across Louth on Friday last.

During the 24 hours of Operation Slow Down, Gardaí and GoSafe checked the speed of 140,223 vehicles nationally and detected 225 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit for the area.

Among the speeding incidents reported, two were recorded in Louth.

The first involved a vehicle travelling at 117kilomet­es per hour in a 100kh zone.

Meanwhile, another car was clocked travelling at 119kilomet­res per hour in a 100m km zone.

Chief Superinten­dent Finbarr Murphy of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau highlighte­d the success of the initiative, saying: ‘I would like to thank those road users who continue to drive safely and do not put themselves and other road users in danger.’
