Dundalk IT Letterkenny IT 0-19 2-11

DKIT maintained their perfect start to the campaign, with a slender 0-19 to 2-11 victory over a Michael Murphy managed LYIT side last week.

Despite horrendous conditions both sides served up some fantastic football at DKIT sports grounds.

Donal Meegan opened the scoring in the first minute with a well-taken effort, but the Donegal outfit made the perfect start, when after two minutes, Enda McCormick pounced on a breaking ball and tapped into an empty net.

The excellent Sam Mulroy responded for DKIT with a 45, but it wouldn’t be long before LYIT had raised their second A RADIO documentary, reflecting on Louth’s All-Ireland final victory of 1957 will be broadcast this Bank Holiday Monday, October 30th on LMFM.

Produced and presented by Colm Corrigan, it will hear recollections from some of the surviving players, as well as family members of those who have passed on.

Contributors include Kevin Beahan, Frank Lynch, Jim McArdle, Patsy Coleman and Jim green flag, with Darragh O’Connor’s effort sailing into the back of the net, to give his side a 2-2 to 0-3 lead after 11 minutes.

DKIT responded well though, playing some very nice football at times and David McGivney’s effort just before half time left the score line reading 2-6 to 0-10 in favour of LYIT at the interval.

Oisin McConville’s charges came storming out of the traps after half time, scoring the first five points of the second half, three of which coming from Tadhg McEneaney, to give themselves a three point lead.

It looked set to be an easy ride for the home side heading into the last quarter, after LYIT were reduced to 14 men when Michael Carroll was sent off for two yellow cards, but his side responded well and a “45” from Michael Langan left only one point between the sides with time almost up.

McEneaney, who was outstanding Roe, while from the archives, the programme has been able to source interviews with the late Dan O’Neill and Jimmy Mc Donnell.

The programme also takes into account the Cork perspective, with corner-back Dan Murray re-living the moment Sean Cunningham got the final touch into the Rebel net.

The programme, entitled ‘When Sam Crossed the Boyne’, airs just after the 1pm news. throughout the game, sealed the points with a free in the 62nd minute, much to the delight of the DKIT contingent, who now face the long trip to Derry to face Ulster University Coleraine in their last group game.

Speaking afterwards, DkIT boss McConville said he is delighted with his side’s start to the campaign and confirmed their are very much targetting promotion to Division 1.

‘It’s a great start to the year considering we are still missing a huge amount of players, but we’ve probably used 25-26 already and we’ve had a good look at some of the young lads that have come in

‘We didn’t really create that many goal chances. We had one or two half chances but if we create a few more we’ll stick them away because we have the forwards to do that.

‘We have a couple of goals this year. The first one is too try and get out of Division 2. We’ve been at semi-final stages now a couple of times and haven’t managed to get over the line, so we feel as if we have a stronger squad this year and hopefully that will stand to us as time goes. So the initial goal this year before Christmas, is to try and get out of Division 2.’
