Radio show recalls Omeath Gaeltacht

THE story of the Gaeltacht area of Omeath, the last part of Co Louth where Irish was spoken by native speakers, will be broadcast on LMFM Radio, Monday October 30 at 12noon.

‘ The Forgotten Gaeltacht’, has been produced by Sarah McCann of Little Road Production­s Ltd.The one-hour documentar­y, for LMFM Radio, funded by the Broadcasti­ng Authority of Ireland with the Television License Fee.

It captures the stories of the people, landscape, traditions, language and culture of the Omeath Gaeltacht over 50 years after the death of the last native Irish speaker and 90 years after the closure of Coláiste Bhríde, which was an Irish College set up in 1912 with important links to Irish revolution­aries such as Eoin MacNeill and Padraig Pearse.

Exploring Omeath’s importance to the Oirghilla/Oriel region, along with how a Gaeltacht survived for so many years in this area, the documentar­y acknowledg­es the recent developmen­ts in the area to promote the Irish language, including the setting up of Aras na nGael, a cultural and

Tholsel Street on that day.

It is a family fun event and you are also invited to enjoy the new twilight market, games and lots of surprises! All proceeds go to St. Oliver’s N.S., Carlingfor­d. community centre.

Listeners can hear audio excerpts of native Irish speakers Aine Ui Annluain and Peter Sloane feature in the documentar­y courtesy of RTÉ Archives, and other former Irish native speakers, from The Doegen Records Web Project, and a reading of 1916 Proclamati­on, rumoured to have been agreed and signed in Omeath Park.

The special and specific equipment that is required for patients following a major head and brain injury is very restrictiv­e in a number of hospitals.
