Mixed fortunes for DkIT

-

DKIT manager Oisin McConville cut a frustrated figure after his side’s narrow 2-12 to 1-14 Division 2 League semi-final defeat to WIT last week.

The former Armagh star felt ‘nothing went right’ for his side during the course of the game and conceded the defeat is a setback ahead of the Sigerson Cup.

‘I think they were probably the better team over the hour. but nothing seemed to go right for us, it was one of those nights. It was a sticky night and our boys just couldn’t get going. Hugely disappoin ting for us, but you get nights like that and as a footballer you just accept them and try and move on.’

The Crossmaglen native believes it will be a big step up to Sigerson football, and admitted the result is a huge setback for his side, after winning their first three games.

‘Well it’s a step backwards. If we were heading into the Trench Cup we’d be very optimistic, but we’re going in with the big boys. It’s a massive step up and hopefully we won’t have any more nights like tonight where we don’t perform.

‘The only thing is we went in to the game expecting to win so that’s a disappointing thing. We had a lot of players who performed below par so that’s the biggest disappointment for us.’

However, McConville believes it’s an achievement for DKIT to be playing at Sigerson level and he’s looking forward to the upcoming draw with optimism.

‘We will be just waiting on the draw now to see who we get and take it from there that’s all we can do.

‘It’s good for us that we’re there and we’re challenging and playing against better teams so we look forward to at least one good performance in it. All we can do is be positive, negativity’s not going to get us anywhere at this stage, so put tonight’s performance down to inexperience and move on.’

Meanwhile, DKIT intermediate manager Craig Lynch was in better spirits following his sides 5-21 to 1-9 victory over GTI, with the Louth goalkeeper believing it will take a serious outfit to overcome his side.

‘It’s the first time we got a full team out all year and you can just see with the result. If we have everyone out there are not many teams that will be able to stop us. Even when we took off a few of our boys, we still kept the scoring up and we never let them back into the game.’

Jordan O’Donoghue was also very pleased with the DkIT performance.

‘It’s good to get the win in the quarter final and go on to the next stage and hopefully we can go the whole way. The lads played really well and made easy work of it.’
