Derby joy for Bay

-

SUBSTITUTE Quadri Olowu broke Glenmuir hearts snatching a 94th minute winner as winless Glenmuir suffered a seventh defeat after making a flying start at Glenmuir Park in the bitter cold on Friday night.

With new manger Wayne Conroy in charge for the first time, the home side scored twice in three minutes as they raced into a two nil lead with only eight minutes on the clock, and might have even doubled that advantage only for Bay goalkeeper Kevin Mullen who made two great saves.

The home side’s explosive start would have any one watching wondering how they were pointless—the one game they won against Quay Athletic was erased as the latter have withdrawn from the league with the campaign not at the half way stage.

John Byrne opened the scoring with a brilliant finish and great diving header by Oisin Murray at the far post doubled their lead three minutes later.

But the home side couldn’t sustain the pace and Alfonso Crespo came close to reducing the leeway when he skipped around goalkeeper David McKenny only for his shot to be cleared off the line. The last 15 minutes of the half belonged to Bay and the pressure paid off when Paddy Connor whipped in a fantastic free kick and Johnny Winters rose highest to head home.

Glenmuir’s play wasn’t as fluid in the second half but they still looked favourites to cause an upset with Bay chasing promotion. But five minutes in Marcel Ekwueme hit the equaliser turning smartly in the box before poking the ball past McKenny.

Glenmuir responded positively with a couple of attempts by Byrne and Brendan Sheils which were narrowly off the mark, and forced a number of corners that on another day might have yielded a goal.

Bay showed their experience as they pushed forward in search of the winner, and it arrived when a long ball by Mullen was helped on by Brendan Nash and Crespo for Olowu to run onto and round the keeper and slot home.
