BOYNE DUNDALK 0 17

A LIVELY and very young Dundalk U16 team took on their closest rivals Boyne in Shamrock Lodge, Drogheda, on Sunday.

Dundalk fielded a very young U16 team, with 12 players from the U15 age group making up the 20-strong panel.

The game was a very tight affair, as it always is between these two fiercest of local rivals.

Dundalk played fantastic rugby with a super team effort and ran out comfortable winners with a 17-0 scoreline.

The first half was nip and tuck and generally very tight affair.

Dundalk led 5-0 at the half time break. with the only breakthrough coming when out half Tom Corcoran cleverly kicked a perfectly weighted chip over the advancing Boyne backline, which was then brilliantly collected by outside-centre Lee O’Carroll to score bravely in the corner, with three Boyne defenders on his back.

The second half was more of the same, with big hits and brave defending from both teams

Dundalk number 8 Adam Duffy won a great turnover on his own 22 and fed it out to scrum half James O’Connell who moved the ball quickly to no 10 Corcoran and he threw a lovely skip pass to outside centre Lee O’Carroll.

O’Carroll made a tremendous run up THE ARGUS to the Boyne 22 before being tackled, Dundalk cleaned the ensuing ruck with Liam O’Donnell and Seamus Boyle and quickly recycled the ball to new boy Anton McCreavey on the wing , who scored brilliantly in the corner on his debut.

The final score came when Boyne - under pressure - had a scrum on their five-metre line which was fed to their No 10 to exit, but Tom Corcoran charged the kick down and was able to score virtually under the posts. The try was converted by O’Carroll for a 17-0 lead.

As expected Dundalk had to withstand fierce Boyne pressure at the end, defending wave after wave of Boyne attacks, but it was not their day and this was summed up when their winger broke the Dundalk line and looked sure to touch down but was smashed by Aodhan Fotzpatick to stop a near certain score, Boyne lost the ball forward from Fitzpatrick’s crunching tackle and Dundalk cleared.

Best for the winners were Joshua O’Hare, Lochlainn O’Conbourne, Fionn O’ Brien and Adam Duffy.
