Warnings of water shut-offs during lead replacement works

-

WATER supplies in a number of areas in Dundalk may be affected over the following weeks as works begin to remove old lead pipes connecting properties in the town with the public water supply network.

This work is due to get underway next week in Green Acres, Afton Drive and Laurel Grove, and could also involve decommissioning and replacing lead service connection pipes with modern high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic pipes.

Derek Deignan, Irish Water’s Networks Programme Regional Lead, explained: ‘Irish Water is responsible for the pipe from the outer edge of the boundary of a property. The property owner is responsible for the pipe from the outer edge of the property boundary to the building and all the internal plumbing. Where public side lead pipework is replaced as part of this project, the customer will be notified that it is likely that there is lead pipework present within their property.’

He advised that the works ‘may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours prior notice.’

‘ The works will be carried out on behalf of Irish Water by GMC Utilities and are planned to continue into 2018. Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers.’

‘ Traffic management will be in place for the duration of the works. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.’
