Dromiskin’s green fingered gardeners honoured

-

Dromiskin’s green fingered residents were honoured recently at the third annual Dromiskin Tidy Towns House and Garden Awards! The presentation of residential properties and housing estates plays a big part in Tidy Towns success and the Awards, sponsored by Parish of Darver Credit Union and Councillor Liam Reilly, are seen as a fitting way to acknowledge those residents who present their houses and gardens to the highest possible standard and hopefully motivate others to join the effort!

Judging had taken place during the month of August with a number of categories including Best Floral Display, Best Cottage Style Planting, Best Permanent Planting Style, Best Garden in Housing Estate, Most Innovative Garden, Best Overall Garden and the coveted Passion for Gardening Award.

Assessed by an independent adjudication panel who were hugely impressed with the flair for gardening that was very obvious in design and plant selection and delivered originality and high impact in the village these awards have become, in a short period of time, a very important environmental and social event in the village.

Cllr Liam Reilly, speaking in a dual capacity as Secretary of Dromiskin Tidy Towns and Chairperson of the Ardee Municipal District, thanked the Parish of Darver Credit Union for sponsoring the awards once again this year as well as Haggardstown Garden Centre who sponsored the Passion for Gardening Award. Cllr Reilly also stressed the importance of individual effort in any community because it is the cumulative effect of such individual effort that contributes significantly to the overall presentation and character of a village.

Pat Mulligan, Chairman of Dromiskin Tidy Towns reflected on a very successful year in both the National Tidy Towns Competition and the Louth Looking Good Awards. He highlighted that one of the key areas that offers the most potential for increased marks is ‘Residential’ which makes an initiative such as the House and Garden awards so important in motivating and acknowledging the effort of residents. The contribution of the Junior Tidy Towns members was also highlighted and it was noted that many of the projects carried out this year were in collaboration with the Junior members, three of whom, Aoife Costello, Eimear Costello and Sinead Temple were honoured for their outstanding attendance on work sessions during 2017.
