Donating hair to Rapunzel

- By OLIVIA RYAN

NINE year old Doireann Conlon had a makeover with a difference when she had her hair cut for the charity Rapunzel last week!

The Gaelscoil student donated her locks to the charity which supplies hair to be used as wigs for children and adults who have suffered hair loss.

Proud mum Jacqueline explained that it was an idea Doireann first expressed nearly two years.

‘I remember reading a story to her about another little girl from town who had donated her hair to Rapunzel.’

The Rapunzel Foundation is a charitable organisation that works to improve the lives of those living with hair loss through fund-raising as well as through hair-raising.

Hair is raised through the Rapunzel Foundation’s Ponytail campaign, where people commit to growing their hair 14 inches or longer with the view to their hair being sent to help make much needed wigs to improve the lives of those living with the hair loss.

‘Doireann thought this was an incredible thing to do. She has always been a very kind hearted person,’ said Jacqueline

‘She has always had long hair, but it was coming up to her Holy Communion year, so we waited until after that.’

Having kept her locks extra long over recent months in preparation for ‘ the big cut’ Jacqueline added that she showed no sign of nerves as the big day approached.

‘She was actually really excited to be doing it, and they were so good to her in Eclips, which made it very special.’

The inspiring nine year old also committed to raising funds for the Dundlk Cara Cancer Centre, and it delighted to have raised almost €1,205 which was presented to the Centre last Wednesday.
