DkIT aiming to help the north east prosper

- By OLIVIA RYAN

DUNDALK Institute of Technology aims to play an integral part in the prosperity of the region, according to the new institute president Michael Mulvey.

Speaking at the launch of the New Community Support Fund at Dundalk Credit Union, Mr. Mulvey described Dundalk Credit Union as a key provider of much needed support for many organisations that gathered at the launch.

Among those taking part in the launch were: Maria Goretti Foundation, SNAP, Turas, Cara Cancer Support Services, Links local Network, Women’s Aid Dundalk, Pieta House, Rape Crisis North East, St. Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, Simon Community, the Birches and St.Vincent De Paul.

The DkIT president paid tribute to all the organisations for the work they do for society, and for the ‘sincerity and believe which each leader communicates in a calm and understated way.’

‘You get a real sense from this of the commitment and the energy of the volunteers and other personnel who make up these organisations.’

He added that supporting the community, and being a key part of the community is an integral part of DkIT’s mission.

‘We are honoured that many of the organisations here this evening have taken our students on placement, in particular Birches, Simon, Turas Counselling Services, Women’s Aid Dundalk.’

He added that many of the organisations provide guest lectures to undergraduate nursing and midwifery programmes, Women’s Aid Dundalk partnered with the School of Health and Science to develop programmes in curbing domestic abuse.

The Netwell Casala Research Centre were also involved in dementia research with the Birches.

‘Dundalk Credit Union itself is also a leader. It is so refreshing to deal with a financial institution that is local – has a face – is entirely invested in the local community.

‘I should acknowledge that Dundalk Credit Union had directly supported DkIT and continues to do so and my colleagues and myself are grateful for that.’

He added: ‘DkIT, as your college, a university level institution with the best campus in the country is on your doorstep. My colleagues and myself we want to grow it further.’

Mr. Mulvey explained that research had shown that where students go to college is a good prediction of where they will settle down, get a job or set up a business.

‘ The larger DkIT becomes, the more likely the whole region will prosper, and judging by the progress to date – the future is very bright.

‘I salute the organisations and their leaders who are here and declare the Dundalk Credit Union Community Fund to be launched.’
