Caldwell’s late late strike wins it for Glenmuir

-

GLENMUIR kept their revival going with another last-gasp win away to BJD Celtic on Sunday that all but secures their place in Division 3 for next season.

Just a few weeks back Glenmuir were rock bottom with no points from their first eight games, but they now find themselves on 16 points and this game really showed their character as they came from 2-0 down with 10 minutes to go to clinch all three points with the last kick of the match.

They dominated the opening half but somehow found themselves behind in the 20th minute when Edgar Bitanis misjudged a long ball that allowed the BJD striker go one-on-one with Pat Crilly, who was unlucky not to save the shot after getting a good hand to it.

The away side had chance after chance but for all their efforts they couldn’t find the back off the net and early in the second half it got worse for Glenmuir when Crilly slipped and allowed a speculative effort go past him into the net.

At 2-0 it seemed that Glenmuir were in for a defeat, but they never gave up and with 10 minutes to go Ronan Molloy scored a spectacular goal to give them a chance of securing at least a point.

Soon after this panic started setting in with the home team and they began to give away a lot of free kicks. With time almost up Glenmuir were awarded a penalty for handball and John Byrne stepped up to smash the ball into the bottom right corner to give the keeper no chance.

It got even better for Glenmuir when a David McComish long ball up the pitch was controlled by Byrne on the edge of the area. A home player made a bad challenge on the young striker that resulted in a red card, and Eimhin Caldwell smashed the free kick in off the crossbar to the delight of his teammates.

The referee then blew the final whistle before the home side could centre the ball.

GLENMUIR: Pat Crilly, David McComish, Niall Hand (Liam Cunnigham), Edgar Bitanis, Willy Kelly, Mark Molly, Brendan Sheils, Eimhin Caldwell, Ronan Molloy, Luke Murray (Ronan Hand), John Byrne.
