Debut exhibition for artist Mark Bourke at Basement

-

‘LIKE father like son’ goes the old saying, and Dromiskin artist Mark Bourke admits that it was hard to escape from the influence of his late father, Sylvester Bourke who was a long time member of the North Louth Painters.

Mark is self taught, turning to painting four or five years ago and he is now having is first exhibition in The Basement Gallery as part of its emerging artists series.

‘I like to experiment with different media and produce different mixes and sometimes end up using household paint,’ he says.

‘I paint from within my own mind so when I approach a canvass I’ll haven’t a notion what the end result will be.’

Mark describes his work as ‘semi abstract’, saying he is more interested in the abstract qualities of art than representational work.

‘I tend to find that much of what I produce is inspired by memories of my childhood and is influenced by the books and television shows of the ‘seventies.’

He cites the Dutch artist Mondrian, German painter Erich Heckel and the French artist Raoul Dufy as artists whose work he admires.

Mark’s exhibition continues in The Basement Gallery until February 3rd. It is from 10am to 4pm,
