Dundalk 10K race to be ‘bigger, better’ for 2018

-

DUNDALK Institute of Technology (DkIT) last week launched its annual 10k road race, which will take place on the evening of Wednesday April 25th.

This year’s event again includes a 5k novelty walk for families and novice joggers, aimed at opening up the race to a host of new runners.

This year’s event will also include a Corporate Challenge, an opportunity for businesses to engage in a healthy and active event. The winning company will receive €500 which will be donated to a charity of the winner’s choice by DkIT.

Hailed as one of the flattest courses in County Louth, the Dundalk 10k is the ideal race for runners looking to set a new personal best or those seeking to complete their first medium-distance walk or run. This year the route will start and finish at the DkIT Sport premises and will take in the sites of the DkIT campus and the Blackrock road.

The Dundalk 10k includes gen- erous sponsorship from local businesses, including DkIT Sport, Rescruit Island, Servisource, Fyffes and Dundalk Retail Park. Race entrants can expect plenty of added extras such as a goodie bag sponsored by footwear brand Sketchers, a race t-shirt supplied by CX Sport, chip-timed race records and refreshments upon completion of the race.

At the launch Derek Crilly, Sports and Society Officer at DkIT and Dundalk 10k lead organiser, said: ‘ We are extremely excited to launch the 2018 Dundalk 10k which promises to be bigger and better than ever before with the addition of the Corporate Challenge. With just over three months to go until race day, there is plenty of time to start training for the race. We look forward to welcoming runners, joggers and walkers of all levels and ages on the 25th of April. Don’t miss out on our early-bird offer and sign up today!’

Also speaking at the launch, Kelly Connor of DkIT Sport and race sponsor said: ‘ We are de- lighted to sponsor the Dundalk 10K again this year. The race is a fantastic community event and is a great excuse for people of all sporting levels to get and remain active. We look forward to another fantastic evening in April at DkIT.’

Early-bird race entry costs €10 and this offer will remain for a limited time only for the next two weeks. To register visit www. dundalk10k.com or contact the DkIT Sports & Societies office by emailing sports@dkit.ie.

Like previous years, a sizeable proportion of the race proceeds will go to charity, with Dundalk Simon Community, Sosad Dundalk and Oran’s Foundation the charity partners for 2018. Some proceeds will also go towards funding of the new athletics track in Dundalk.

Online entries open tomorrow (Wednesday) for the Dundalk 10k race and 5k fun run. DUNDALK native Lynn Craven was one of only two players who featured for the full 90 minutes in two of the Republic of Ireland Under-19s’ friendly matches in Portugal over the past week.

The centre-half (pictured below) did well in last Wednesday’s 3-1 friendly defeat by the hosts and retained her place on Friday as Dave Connell’s team went down by the same scoreline against England. Shelbourne player Craven and her fellow Ireland squad members were in Portugal as part of their preparations for the European Championships Elite Round in April.
