Carlingford just edge out Doolergy /Heynestown

-

ON Sunday afternoon the meeting of Carlingford Celtic and Doolargy/Heynestown Celtic took place in Muirhevnamor football pitch.

It was anticipated that it would be a close game as the last time these two teams played there was only one goal that separated them.

Doolargy/Heynestown started off strong and after 5 minutes a great move in midfield found Adam Shields wide on the right. He give an inch perfect pass to their striker Conall McEnaney and he slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance.

From then on it was evenly matched with a few yellow cards handed out as both teams tried to get a foot hold on the game. One of those free kicks awarded to Carlingford resulted in the equaliser. A lovely floated ball into the opposition box somehow found its way through numerous players and found Stephen Malone unmarked at the far post and he chipped it back over the keeper into the top corner of the net. 1 - 1 after 35 minutes and it remained at that score until half time.

The second half started with Doolargy Heynestown on top and created numerous chances but couldn’t make them count. Ten minutes into the second half a clash of heads from both teams resulted in some attention being needed for Stephen Malone who unfortunately had to leave the field of play. We wish him a speedy recovery!

This seemed to wake Carling- ford up and they had most of the play, creating a few good chances and bringing the best out of Doolargy/Heynestown defenders and keeper. At the 80th minute a long hopeful ball into the Doolargy/Heynestown box wasn’t dealt with properly and it fell to Shane Coleman 13 yards out. As he hit the ball first time, a last ditch attempt to block it resulted in it deflecting off the player into the top corner of the net.

From then on it was nearly all one way traffic as Doolargy/ Heynestown pressed for the equaliser but to no avail as solid defending from Carlingford kept them at bay.

The final whistle arrived with the win going to Carlingford 2 - 1 after a very entertaining game.
