Ask Angela campaign

-

THE garda who arrested the man charge with the murder of Japanese worker Yosuke Sasaki should be nominated for a Gold Scott Medal for bravery. Mr John Temple said the events of January 3rd could have been a lot worse but for the actions of a single member of the Garda Siochana on his way to work. He proposed that Garda Damien Welby be nominated for a Gold Scott Medal for his act of courage. His proposal was seconded by Cllr Anne Campbell who said Gda Welby had done ‘an incredible job’. THE ‘Ask Angela’ campaign which allows people worried about their personal safety on a night out to alert bar staff by using a code word, should be extended to Louth, Cllr Marianne Butler suggested. She said that the campaign has started in Waterford and was being promoted by the City Council in getting the information out to the hospitality industry. It was getting a lot of publicity and she felt they should look into it as it’s not just children but older people who are at risk from meeting people over the internet. IFA representative Mr Matthew McGreehan has expressed his frustration at the lack of a response from the Department of Justice to a letter sent by the Dundalk Joint Policing Committee regarding the electronic tagging of repeat offenders who are out in bail.

He said that the problem of people re-offending while out on bail was ‘massive’ and recalled writing to then Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald about the tagging of repeat offenders. He was unhappy to hear that there had only been an acknowledgement to their letter some months later and no further follow up.
