Charlie flies to Rock’s rescue in Dromin win

DROMIN ROCK CELTIC 0 2

TWO bits of striker’s instinct from Charlie Murdock were the difference between these two sides in this Under 16 League match in Dromin on Sunday.

The sides were scoreless at half time, after playing out an evenly contested opening period, in which ball control and quality play was difficult on a bobbly pitch.

However the second half was only two minutes on when Murdock opened the scoring with a well drilled volley to the bottom corner of the net.

Just over ten minutes later Murdock doubled the visitors lead with a well executed lob over the advancing ‘keeper after he was played through by a long ball from Azeeze Opebi.

Trailing by those two goals, Dromin pushed hard for the re- mainder of the match, but they lacked the goal poacher up front to take advantage of their efforts, with the Rock defence standing firm and clearing well delivered crosses into their penalty box.

Ben Callaghan had the first chance of the game for the home side after only eight minutes but his volley was easily saved by Eoin Cassidy.

Azeeze Opebi had Rock’s first chance after fifteen minutes but his effort was deflected wide for a corner.

Just on the half hour Opebi should have opened the scoring when he beat the ‘keeper to a bouncing ball outside the penalty area.

He headed over the advancing Jack Lynch, but lost out to Adam McMahon in the following footrace to the loose ball.

Stung by those early Rock goals in the second half Dromin pushed hard and had several half chances, but Tom Grey headed over from perhaps their best chance just a minute after Rock had doubled their lead.

Rock were dangerous on the break in the second half and with goalscorer Murdock chasing down a hat-trick and Layo Adebanjo making a big impression following his introduction and they should have done better from some of their breakaways.

Dromin’s heads never dropped until the final whistle but the Rock defence stood firm and never looked like conceding the first goal which would have given the home side hope that an equaliser might follow.
