Woman arrested after cocaine seizure

SECOND MAJOR SEIZURE OF COCAINE AS GARDAI TARGET DRUG DEALERS

- By MARGARET RODDY

GARDAI are continuing their crack down on drug dealing in Dundalk and north Louth, with the seizure of €56,000 worth of cocaine during a joint operation last Friday.

A 47-year-old woman was arrested in relation to the possession of drugs for sale and supply after gardai seized the drug during a search of a house in the Castletown Road area.

Local gardai, members of the National Drugs Unit and Customs and Excise officers were involved in the operation which came just over a week after Chief Supt Christy Mangan told a meeting of the Dundalk Joint Policing Committee that a dedicated drugs unit is needed in the town.

This is the second major seizure of cocaine in Dundalk in recent months as 12 kilos of the drug were seized by gardai before Christmas.

And in a separate operation, gardai discovered €180 worth of cannabis herb and drug paraphernalia when they searched a house in Rockmarshall the same day. A file is being prepared for the DPP in relation to that incident.

A 23 year old man was arrested after he was found in possession of €25 of cannabis herb at Aghameen Park, while a 42 year old man was found to be in possession of €20 of cannabis herb at The Crescent. Both incidents occurred on Sunday.

Gardai are continuing their investigations into a series of incidents which saw eleven cars being damaged and two houses broken into in the Ard Easmuinn and Mount Avenue areas in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The windows of eleven cars parked outside houses in Ard Easmuinn were smashed in the hours of Friday night/Saturday morning.

Two teenagers broke into a house at Mount Avenue at 4am after damaging a window. The occupants of the house were in bed at the time and the intruders demanded that they hand over car keys. They left a short time later after looking for money.

Shortly afterwards, another house in the same area, was broken into and a window smashed. Two males fled the scene.

One juvenile has since been arrested and is in custody.

Two foreign nationals living in a house at Tom Bellew Avenue had a frightening ordeal on Sunday evening when three males entered the house, armed with a screw driver. One of the intruders went upstairs and stole a small amount of cash. The gang made their getaway in a small dark coloured hatchback car.

A substantial amount of cigarettes was stolen during a break-in to the MACE shop in Omeath in the early hours of Monday morning.

Three men used a sledge hammer to smash the window of the shop and opened the cigarette cabinet, making off with what has been described as ‘a substantial amount’ of cigarettes.

They make their escape in a dark coloured car, possibly a Toyata Avensis.
