Sean O’Mahony’s pay tribute to generous ‘Hazel’

- By OLIVIA RYAN

A Dundalk football team have paid tribute to a late fan, naming a vital new addition to the club in his honour.

The Sean O’Mahony’s GFC confirmed receipt of a new John Deere ride on mower last week, just in time for the Spring cutting season to begin.

But the heartwarming story behind the new machine has moved fans and everyone involved with the Point Road club.

It was with great sadness that news of the passing of Derek Grimes, better known to his family and friends as ‘Hazel’ emerged in December last.

During his final month’s bravely battling illness, Derek, who was originally from the Point Road had made a final gesture to the club, in set- tling aside a donation for them after his passing.

A spokesman told the Argus that the legacy funds were gratefully received by all at Sean O’Mahony’s GFC, who have been moved by Derek’s generosity.

‘We wanted to mark his kindness to the club in a special way,’ said the spokesman.

Having used the funds to purchase the new ride on mower, the decision was made for it to feature a unique registration plate.

‘We had a ‘Hazel 1’ plate added to the mower, His generosity won’t be forgotten.’

The mower has been entrusted to the care of the club’s groundsmen Gerrard Redmond and Anto Mackin.

‘With the busy cutting season just around the corner, the new addition is certain to be put to good use!’ said the spokesman.
