Forthcomin­g history lecture on Armagh political history

A forthcomin­g history lecture with the period in focus being that of the early 20th century and coupled with the specific topic of political elections within the wider Armagh region can be expected to attract considerab­le interest.

The event, at the Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library and Archive in Armagh is one that has been re-scheduled and now takes place one week ahead of the launch of the 2017 edition of the journal Seanchas Ard Mhacha. The lecture, which is arranged by Cumann Seanchais Ard Mhacha (Armagh Diocesan Historical Society) is open to all, with free admission, and takes place on Wednesday, February 21 with commenceme­nt at the usual time of 8pm.

Delivering the lecture entitled, ‘ The 1918 South Armagh by-election’ will be a historian and writer well known and widely respected in history circles locally and throughout Ireland. Dr Eoin Magennis is currently Senior Economist (Economic Research) in the Economic Policy Centre at Ulster University. Previously the Policy Research Manager of Intertrade Ireland in all-island and cross border policy research, Eoin Magennis was initially Lecturer in Modern and Economic History at Queen’s University before fulfilling a role in Research and Outreach at Linenhall Library in Belfast. He later became Research and Informatio­n Officer with the Centre for Cross-Border Studies. Dr Eoin Magennis has published widely on 18th and 20th century Irish history.

A long term member and officer with Cumann Seanchais Ard Mhacha, Dr Eoin Magennis has also, since 2013, been editor of the highly esteemed annual journal Seanchas Ard Mhacha, the latest issue of which is being formally launched in the Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library and Archive on the evening (7:30pm) of Wednesday 28th February.

The substance of the much anticipate­d lecture on Wednesday 21st February will focus on the South Armagh by-election of January 1918 the intense campaign for which generated national interest and involved several of the more significan­t names in Irish politics. Actual polling in the 1918 by-election took place on 1st February.
